Every major city has an underground scene. Different governments handle music and nightlife with varying levels of stringency, but wherever you see forms of administration, you will see an underground scene emerge as an inevitable byproduct.
Naturally, many of the figureheads in these scenes across the world have a tendency to question their status quo, whatever it may be, and respond with new ideas that go against the grain.
Take blues music: the pillars of blues music stand in African heritage, having sprouted as the soundtrack to their struggles of slavery and discrimination. The response of techno titans and Neue Deutsche Weller progressives in the underbelly of Berlin’s Cold War-divided city was an active choice to swim against the tide.
Our Ear To The Ground series aims to dive into some more of these movements around the world in order to shed light on how different musicians are using their output to respond to the societies that surround them.
